As we wave goodbye to winter and say hello to the warm spring sun, we look forward to spending more time outside; relaxing, eating and entertaining. And although your outside areas may have been neglected during the cooler months, the welcome warmth provides the perfect opportunity to rework these areas.
Whether you have a modest patio or large lawn area, begin by working out what space you want to highlight which will help you decide what outdoor furniture you need. Regardless of your budget, there are many fantastic options when it comes to outdoor furniture.
If space is aplenty you could opt for a generous wicker setting to define the area or a couple of daybeds to add a sense of luxury. Alternatively, keep it relaxed with an old trestle table and mix matched chairs or budget friendly stools from Ikea and the like.
Don’t be deterred if you have limited space though, by adding a small table and chairs you’ll still be able to enjoy your morning tea or coffee while reading the paper. Even the smallest balcony or patio can be livened up with one or two potted plants (think cacti, palms, citrus trees) or wall hung herbs. For a beer garden feel, paved areas look great with either a timber picnic table or bar table and stools; with the addition of a large umbrella you’ll be well set for summer!
When it comes to decorating your outdoor spaces, stick to a style as you would inside your home. Striped cushions for example can help create a polished Hamptons look when paired with classic day lounges; or a more laid-back coastal feel when matched with white washed timbers - Jason Grant has a great new ‘Summer Escape’ range which includes relaxed pieces that transport you to the beach.
If the area calls for more colour though, take inspiration from surrounding gardens and incorporate floral cushions or Aztec patterns to create your own outdoor oasis.
Ensure you add some lanterns, a fire pit or patio heater so that your outdoor area is just as functional when the sun goes down!
