It’s lovely to be able to offer your spare bedroom to family and friends when they need it. However it’s hard to strike the perfect balance as this particular room is either sparse and basic or a magnet for clutter, when what we want is welcoming room which makes our guests feel right at home. Guest rooms that I have enjoyed staying in have always had the following in common...
This is a no brainer, but start with good foundations - a comfortable bed for your guests, plush pillows and nice linen. I always add a throw rug (as I hate being cold) so that your guests don’t have to rummage through your linen cupboard in the middle of the night. Don’t forget to pop a clean towel and face washer on the end of the bed either.
Next, look at the functional aspects such as lighting and bedside tables. Whether it’s two or only one table, it’s nice for your guests to have a place to pop their phone or water glass along with other bits and pieces they may need. If you aren’t keen on spending big buck on these, simply improvise with a lovely chair, stool or stack of storage boxes. Once you’ve selected your bedside table, find a suitable floor lamp or a table lamp that doesn’t take up too much space. Ensure the lamp isn’t too dim, so that your guests are able to read with ease.
Lastly, pay attention to small touches which will really make a difference. A fresh vase of flowers (provided your guests don’t have hay fever!) is an easy way to brighten up the room and the addition of a mirror or clothing rack is sure to be appreciated. Include a couple of magazines or interesting books for your guests to read at their leisure and they will be well and truly set for their stay.
